On Saturday, November 4, the LCHS Girls’ Volleyball team went down in the quarterfinals of Division 4 CIF to Santa Monica High School. The girls qualified for the CIF-Southern Section Ford Girls Volleyball Division 4 Championships by winning the Rio Hondo League with a record of 9-1 (win-lose). Overall, the team’s record was 22-7.
The tournament consisted of 32 teams from the Southern Section of CIF. In the round of 32, La Canada High School faced Burbank High School. LCHS finished them off in three quick sets, winning with set scores of 25-13, 25-12, and 25-17. In the round of 16, LCHS faced Rio Mesa High School. Rio Mesa proved to be a difficult adversary, as the best of five series went to the last set, which La Canada closed out 15-12. Unfortunately, LCHS went down to Santa Monica High School in the quarterfinals. They lost three sets in succession, with the scores of 25-21, 25-20, and 25-9.
However, this season shows a huge improvement from previous seasons. The team’s record improved immensely, going from last season’s record of 11-16 to 22-7 this season. LCHS was also able to defeat her regional rivals Monrovia and South Pasadena High School for the first time in years. Not only that, but LCHS was crowned the champions of the Rio Hondo League for the first time in five years.
Junior Natalie Shamilian shared her experience with the team this year. She said, “Almost everyone on the team right now have been on the team for three years. This year was the year that we all clicked and we finally beat some of the teams we never imagined we would beat, like South Pasadena. I’m extremely proud of my team.”
