On January 13, 2021, the United States House of Representatives impeached President Trump, charging him with “incitement of insurrection.” The final vote count was 232 in favor and 197 not in favor. Furthermore, the count was nearly based on party lines, where every House Democrat and 10 House Republicans voted to impeach, and the remaining Republicans voted not to impeach.
The impeachment is significant for two reasons: it is the first time a US president was impeached twice, and it shows that President Trump is losing control of his own Republican party because 10 Republican congressmen broke party lines to vote for an article impeachment against him.
In La Cañada, 156 La Cañada High School students voted on an online poll that asked, “Should Trump be Impeached for Inciting Insurrection.” After 24 hours, 75% voted yes, and 25% voted no.
Adam Driscoll (12) believed President Trump should have been impeached, saying, “I think the impeachment was a good use of the necessary and proper clause. Trump has abused his power as our chief executive, and he must be held accountable.”
While the House swiftly impeached the president, the Senate is not set to reconvene until January 19, a day before President-elect Joe Biden is inaugurated. In a public statement, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has already stated that there is simply not enough time to hold a senate impeachment trial.
