After months of speculation and rumors about what the new iPhone 12 would look like, it’s finally here in a new striking slick square figure. It’s officially been a full month since the phone’s release and people have given their reviews, so here’s everything you’ll need to know about the new base model of the 2020 iPhone.
The iPhone 12 comes in at 3 different storage amounts that correspond to their prices. The base storage is 64GB for 799$ and it continues to ramp up at 128GB for 849$, ending at the peak storage of 256GB for 949$. For all of the technologically advanced readers, a quick TLDR of the phone is listed here: Dimensions 5.78 x 2.81 x 0.29in. Weight 5.78oz. Display 6.1in, 1170 x 2532 pixels, 460ppi. Water-resistance IP68 (depth of 6 meters for 30 minutes). Rear Cameras 12MP, f/1.6 wide, 12MP, f/2.4 ultra-wide. Front Camera 12MP, f/2.2 wide. These specifics are what make the new iPhone better than the last, and here’s why.
Unlike the pillowed display and curved edges found on last year’s iPhone 11 model, the iPhone 12 has a flat screen and flat edges which help give the phone’s body a square look. Both phones still have a large screen and a notch with the FaceID and front facing camera technology.
“The iPhone 12 looks like a better version of the iPhone 5 but with a better camera and nicer screen. I’m glad to see that they brought back the iconic square iPhone design” said LCHS student, Milo Jhun (12).
The phones from last year and this year are both 6.1 inches, however this year’s display is using an OLED screen instead of the LCD technology used on the iPhone 11. This is important since it’s the first high-end display on a base model for Apple’s iPhone, offering brighter colors and better contrast levels. Thus, the resolution and pixels have increased in quality too, from a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch to 460ppi.
This year’s lineup of colors are arguably the best and prettiest out of every iPhone release except for last year’s iPhone 11 color lineup. Each phone has a glass back for their magnetic wireless charging and is complimented well by the colors, white, black, Product (RED), dark blue, and light green.
Apple has been criticized for being late to the 5G trends, but they finally brought it to their entire lineup this year, which allows one to stream higher-quality video or FaceTime in HD over cellular with a lot less lag.
“Although I may not be too into the new iPhone since it hasn’t drastically changed. I do appreciate and enjoy the new 5G because it brings the iPhones up to speed with their competition and also makes their phones so much faster” said Derrick Kim (10).
In addition to 5G speeds, Apple introduced their new A14 Bionic processor that is similar to last year’s A13 Bionic processor. Since Apple is already ahead of the game in their core processors, they didn’t feel a need to change much about their chips, except for making it have the capability to compute 11 trillion operations per second. Although some may rejoice with the 5G technology and core processor, it can be seen as a disadvantage for others. The new processor and 5G eats up much more battery life, which means that the iPhone 12 has less battery life if one chooses to use 5G often.
The camera for this year’s iPhone is essentially the same as the iPhone 11 Pro’s camera, just with an improvement in lighting thanks to Smart HDR3. That allows the phone to adjust the high dynamic range to deliver dramatic results with detail in bright skies and dark shadows at the same time. In regards to video shooting, the user is now able to shoot in 4K frame rates of 60fps, which is a higher quality than 4K shooting in past iPhones.
The iPhone 12 is a nice upgrade from the iPhone 11 but not worth the upgrade if one has the iPhone X (iPhone 10) or above. Although there are new features such as better 4K video shooting or new colorways, it seems that the very passionate and dedicated Apple fans spend their money on negligible differences that the public eye wouldn’t even notice. However, if you want to get the new iPhone it’s not a terrible idea, just know that there will be a bigger difference in performance if you wait until next year’s iPhone’s release.
