Critics say that movies coming out today have been unoriginal, cliche, or boring sequels. Many feel as if the era of classic, amazing films has passed, leaving us with the half-baked, lazy tales as a result of Hollywood running out of ideas.
Despite these critiques, I personally enjoyed many interesting movies this year, one of them being a film called “Knives Out” directed by Rian Johnson. It stars actors like Chris Evans, who played the popular Marvel character Captain America, Daniel Craig, who starred as Agent 007 in one of the James Bond movies, and Jamie Lee Curtis, who is well known for her role in the horror classic Halloween.
The movie is a classic “whodunit” tale- reminiscent of the board game Clue. With its wonderfully eccentric and complex characters, as well as a unique plot, the film is bound to entertain anyone who watches it.
An extremely rich and famous novelist named Harlan Thrombey dies in his mansion after his 85th birthday at the start of the movie. The Police rules it a suicide, which is doubted by many of the main characters. A mysterious, yet well-known detective named Benoit Blanc is anonymously hired to investigate the crime at the writer’s estate. Bewildered family members are questioned about their whereabouts during the scene of the crime, all of whom had attended the writer’s birthday party just days before. Their stories and interactions with Thrombey unfold excitingly before the audience’s eyes.
During the course of this movie, I was enthralled by the intricate storyline, and there was never a moment where I was bored. Despite being a murder-mystery, I found this movie to be incredibly hilarious, with constant bits of clever humor embedded into the serious tone of the characters.
I highly recommend seeing this movie. Providing an unusual yet refreshingly entertaining take on a classic genre, this thrilling film will leave you wanting more.
