On this edition of Spartan Style, we’re featuring Kaylin Trowbridge (12), a senior whose fashion sense makes her stand out in a crowd. Her style could be described in many ways; dark, edgy, or even avant-garde. Let’s hear what Kaylin herself has to say about her clothing!
Q: How would you describe your own style?
A: I don’t know if I have specifically only one style. Sometimes I dress like a doll, an E-boy, or even a British schoolgirl. The main characteristic that stays consistent day-to-day is my color scheme…I really only wear black and white. I love layering lots of different pieces on top of each other, even if it makes me VERY hot during the summer.
Q: How did you first become interested in the world of fashion? Do you intend to pursue it after high school?
A: Fashion is actually only a relatively recent part of my life. In sophomore year, I wasn’t able to fit into my boho pastel clothes anymore…and during the transitional period, I had to start wearing my sister’s clothes. At the time, she mostly wore black and white, which meant so did I. It just kinda stuck. That’s why I wear black. Believe it or not I’m not actually emo. Talk to me once, and it’s pretty obvious! I do actually plan to pursue fashion after high school. In fact, I’m going to college for fashion business and design!
Q: Where do you like to shop?
A: I really only shop second-hand on Depop, Grailed, or in thrift stores. I prefer this over shopping retail for so many reasons, but one is that it’s relatively cheap. This way, I can afford way more clothes. It also helps me experiment with different styles. Plus, there is something special about having something vintage or unique that nobody else has!
Q: Finally, what advice do you have for people hoping to cultivate their own unique style?
A: I think when you’re in high school, there’s a lot of people who maybe don’t like to dress out of the norm, so people are definitely going to look at you and do double-takes. But if you want to dress a specific way, and you want to express yourself a specific way, don’t be afraid to go out of the boundaries. Even if you can’t go 100%, all the way…the first time, if you make little baby steps, it’ll not only help you become the person you want to be and the style you want to have, it’ll help you build character.”
