TECH Club was founded last year by seniors: Rohan Singh and Jonathan You. TECH is an acronym for teamwork, engineering, creativity, and hard work. They have built a partnership with CEC, an after school program for children at the La Cañada elementary schools, for parents who cannot pick up their children when school ends. They have taken it upon themselves to enrich these children in a fun way of learning, conducting new and exciting science experiments when they visit after school.
A weekly after school club, all the members of this club are highly devoted and dedicated. They give up their free time on Wednesdays to come in after school in hopes of spreading the love of engineering and science within these young, curious children. Over the last school year, TECH Club received the cooperation of all three of the elementary schools in La Canada: La Canada Elementary, Palm Crest Elementary, and Palm Canyon Elementary. Within these schools, the club is split into subsections of groups with two site directors at each site.
When asked about the inspiration behind the club, Co-President Jonathan You said, “Rohan and I felt as if the science curriculum at these elementary schools could be improved, so we wanted to make science fun while educational.”
Co-President Rohan Singh went on to explain that he was “deeply passionate about biology” and “being able to spread that to the younger generation is a privilege.”
It is uncommon for high schoolers to make time to teach younger children, let alone call it a privilege, and it really shows his selfless character in this way. Rohan went on to say that he wants to help “improve the present generational divide between the younger and older generations to create a sense of community.” He believes that this has to be done in order for “science to further advance through the younger generation as they are the future, and we are just trying to make the future brighter”.
With this inspirational mindset intact, the club is looking forward to the great things they are going to achieve as it continues through this 2019-2020 school year. It would be a great opportunity and learning experience for everyone to try, especially in high school, as it is hard to come by the younger generation in our hectic and busy everyday lives.Vice President Prescott Hong stated, “TECH Club is rewarding because it really helped me get along with kids and helped me to understand the scientific method better.” TECH Club doesn’t just benefit members of the club, they are also benefiting their local elementary schoolers and providing them with role models that they can look up to.
