The La Cañada High School company theatre department presented their first play of the year, “The Curious Savage,” on September 24 through September 26 at 7 P.M. The two-hour long play took place in the La Cañada Playhouse. Directed by teacher Justin Eick, “The Curious Savage” is a classic comedy about friendship and family.
“This lighthearted look at friendship and family continues to be one of the most produced plays in America today and is perfect for audiences of all ages,” said Eick.
¨The Curious Savage” is John Patrick’s heartwarming comedy about Mrs. Savage, an extremely affluent and indulgent widow, and her misadventures as her careless children send her into a mental institution in order to seize her wealth. However, with the help of an unconventional group of patients, Mrs. Savage leads her greedy relatives on a humorous goose chase.
“I really enjoyed directing this show for a number of reasons. Not only is it a great comedy filled with hilarious characters, but there’s a strong message about inclusion and tolerance that I think is so important, especially in today’s current climate,” director Justin Eick says.
The production was beautifully enhanced by a glorious Victorian mansion that was presented as a mental ward in the play.
“The production was super fun to run. The cast was so small that it became a family, tech included. Because it was so intimate I feel like none of us were super stressed, because we were always finding ways to make each other laugh. All in all, it was a great experience, and the La Cañada playhouse is going to have a great season.” technical theatre department student Georgia Shupper (12) said about the set.
Eick added on, saying that “I’m so proud of all of the hard work that Company Theatre has put into this production! As the first play of the season, we wanted to start off with a great show and I couldn’t be happier with the cast!”
